It is a well known motto in high school sports that "tradition never graduates."

Well, tradition hasn’t graduated for the Sacred Heart High School volleyball team, the Lady Knights displayed that tradition, along with some returning seniors Tuesday night as they opened the 2012 campaign with a convincing three-game victory over Solomon on the Lady Gorillas home court. The match served as the season-opener for both teams.

Sacred Heart came out quickly in all three games, winning 25-17, 25-14 and 25-15.

"I’m real excited about what we have," Sacred Heart coach Rose Wittmman said. "We have a couple of key injuries … for us to come over here and get the kinks worked out is real important. I was real pleased that we could get this thing scheduled with Solomon."

The Lady Knights built a 6-3 lead in the opening game and never trailed, putting together two runs of four points while limiting the Lady Gorillas to just two 3-point runs as they won the season-opening game 25-17.

"It was opening game kind of jitters in a sense," Wittman said. "We were able to work on some things."

Sacred Heart then jumped out 6-2 in the second game of the match and used one 5-point run and two 3-point runs to take the second game 25-17.

Sacred Heart, which does not play again until Sept. 4 when they play host to Minneapolis, sealed the sweep with a 25-15 win in the third game which saw the Lady Knights use a 7-point run early to build a 7-1 lead and followed with runs of 5, 4 and 3 points to secure the victory.

"We have to react faster and we need to play the game faster," Wittman said. "We have Minneapolis next Tuesday. They are always athletic, they are always good so we will have to step it up another couple of notches before next week."

Solomon also is off until Sept. 4 when they it play host to a Wheat State triangular as Wakefield and White City will visit Solomon’s gym.
