Sometimes game, don't live up to their hype, as Herm Edwards would say, that's why you play the game. The game on Friday night between the number 2 ranked team in 5A Salina South and the number 4 ranked team Hays was one of those games.
South played Friday without their best player Cody Busby, who was out with turf toe. The Cougars wouldn't miss a beat without him.
The Indians would strike first when Alex Delton capped the opening drive with a 2 yard touchdown run to put Hays up 6-0.
But it would be all South from there. Cougars march right down the field capping the drive off with a 17 yard touchdown strike from Justin Stonebreaker to Mike Jones. South took a 7-6 and they would never let go of it.
South would pick of the Indians' Delton for the first of three times on the night. That set up Jones, who was filling in nicely for the injured Busby, on a 13 yard TD run. It was 14-6 Cougars. Jones would go for 134 yards rushing in the game.
Then as time expired before the half, South would pad their lead. Stonebreaker kept it himself for the 1 yard touchdown. The Cougars lead 21-6 at the break.
The Hays offense made some uncharacteristic mistakes, probably helped a lot by South's defense. On the Indians first drive of the second half Delton was picked by Zach Nachbar to set up a one yard Touchdown run by Mike Shirk.
The after another Delton pick, Shirtk would score again. South was dominate in its 35-6 win over Hays. With the win the Cougars improved to 7-1 on the season and locked up their spot in the 5A playoffs.
"Hays is a good team," said Salina South head coach Sam Sellers. "We kinda got the ball early and we were able to out physical them basically. We knew going in we had a size advantage up front and we kinda went right at them and challenged their kids."
Hays falls to 6-2. They will have a big game on the road at Salina Central. The Mustangs beat Great Bend on Friday. That mean the winner of the game between Hays and Central is in the playoffs, the loser is done for the year.
