The 2012 Boys State Swimming meet is underway, with the 5-1A swimming prelims finishing up Friday morning, and Diving finals taking place this afternoon.
6A Diving Finals:
The 6A Diving finals where never really in doubt as Clark Thomas of Olathe Northwest won his fourth straight diving championship. Thomas finished with a score of 545.45, only 12 points off of the meet record, set in 2005 by Kelly Marx of BV Northwest. Thomas won the title as a freshman in 2009, when all diving was combined into one classification, and then won the 6A portion of the competition in 2010 & 2011.
Christopher Cusick of Blue Valley North finished in second place with 462.45 points, and Drew Egan of Olathe Northwest finished in third with 438.15. To see complete results from the 6A State Diving competition, click here.

For most of the season, Wichita East & Maize have dominated the swim meets in the Wichita area, now all the schools in the state will be fighting for supremecy in the pool.
The prelims started off with the 200 Yard Medley Relay, and Maize & Wichita East finished third & fourth respectively in the prelims. Maize (Mitchell Wagner, Christopher Clemons, Gavin Olson & Lucas Popp) finished in 1:36.41, while East (Brandon Shinsato, Nate Pirner, Jake Spitz & Andrew Sousa) made it to the wall in 1:38.42.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Kyle Cullinan of Wichita Heights finished with the second-best time in the prelims, coming in at 1:46.00. Charlie King of Wichita East came in with the eighth best time at 1:48.82.
The 200 Yard IM saw Jake Spitz of Wichita East grab the top spot with a 1:55.90, while teammates Pirner & Shinsato finished in fourth (1:57.58) and sixth (2:04.62). Christopher Clemons of Maize will be the seventh seeded swimmer with a 2:01.58.
The fastest sprint of the meet, the 50 Yard Freestyle saw Popp of Maize take a second-seeded time into the finals, having swam a 21.60.
The 100 Yard Butterfly was also dominated by Wichita area kids, with Spitz of East finishing with the top time of 51.38, while Mitchell Wagner (52.47) & Gavin Olson (53.96) of Maize finished in third & fourth respectively
Popp continued his strong day with a first place in the 100 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 46.49, while Erik Russell of Derby will be in the fourth spot, finishing in 48.44.
The 500 Yard Freestyle is the marathon in the pool, and Kyle Cullinan of Wichita Heights will be the top seed, finishing in 4:44.97. King of East will be in third with a 4:49.10, and teammate Brandon Vandeventer is in seventh with a 4:56.31.
The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay saw the Wichita East team of Andrew Sousa, Matthew Clough, Kevin Kilgour & Vandeventer finish in the fifth spot, with a 1:31.09. The Hutchinson Salthawk team of Matt McKenna, Adam Ferguson, Max Stewart & Eric Mullins finished in 1:33.41, good for the eighth seed.
The 100 Yard Backstroke saw three local athletes qualify for the finals, as Wagner of Maize took the top-seed (51.45) while Shinsato of East will be in second with a 53.13 & Russell of Derby is in fourth (53.82).
Nate Pirner of East will be in the fourth seed in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:01.19.
The top seeded qualifier in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay will be the Maize team (Olson, Clemons, Wagner & Popp), who finished with a 3:13.57 time. Wichita East (Pirner, Shinsato, King & Spitz) will be the third seeded team with a 3:16.24.
5-1A Diving Finals:
Corey Luetjen of Blue Valley Stilwell took top honors on the diving board, finishing his meet with a 335.50 to take first place. Ben Forrester of Salina South finished in second with a score of 309.65. To see complete results from the 5-1A State Diving competition, click here.

The Bishop Carroll relay team of Joseph Bachman, Will Smith, Alex Vulgamore & Alec Khoury came in with the second-best time in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, finishing with a time of 1:43.92. Maize South (John Lavalle, Greyson Heckman, Jacob Evraets & caleb Peterson), Newton (Cameraon Spreier, Jace Schmidt, Alex Trumble & Matt Scheuermann), McPherson (Derick Goodson, David Plenert, Cody Persson & Aaron Marshall) & Wichita Collegiate (Jake Barrett, Trent Pirner, Rhys Powell & Sam Horner) also qualified for the finals.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Keiser Witte of Winfield takes the second-best qualifying time into the finals, finishing with a 1:48.74. Cameron Spreier & Alex Trumble of Newton took third & fourth, with Vulgamore of Bishop Carroll also qualifying in sixth.
Andrew Parker of Wichita Independent finished second in the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:07.00, while William McCandless of Independent (5th), John Lavalle of Maize South (6th) & Matt Scheuermann of Newton (8th) also qualified for the Saturday finals.
Keiser Witte will take the top qualifying time in the 50 Yard Freestyle into the finals with a time of 21.86. Calvin Lies of Kapaun Mt. Carmel (5th) & Derek Drees of Hays (8th) also qualified.
In the 100 Yard Butterfly, Greyson Heckman of Maize South carries the second-best qualifying time of 54.11. Vulgamore (3rd) & Backman (5th) of Carroll, along with Paul Knapp of Kapaun (7th) also qualified.
In the 500 Yard Freestyle, Alec Khoury of Carroll finished in fifth, with Trumble of Newton & Matt Martin of Salina Central taking sixth & seventh.
Bryce Kampfe from Salina South finished in third (49.94) in the 100 Yard Freestyle. Derick Goodson of McPherson (4th) and Rhys Powell of Collegiate (5th) also qualified for the finals.
In the 500 Yard Freestyle, Alec Khoury of Bishop Carroll finished in fifth with Alex Trumble of Newton & Matt Martin of Salina Central coming in sixth & seventh respectively.
Maize South (1:34.36) will take the second-seeded time in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay into the finals (Caleb Peterson, Danny Minks, John Lavalle & Greyson Heckman), with Wichita Collegiate (1:35.24) qualifying in seventh (Jake Barrett, Trent Pirner, Sam Horner & Powell). Winfield (Kai McClure, Jesse Hollingsworth, Joe Albright & Witte) goes into the finals in 8th with a 1:35.34.
Lavalle of Maize South is currently in second in the 100 Yard Backstroke (55.81), while Spreier of Newton, Kampfe of Salina South, Justin Kuhlman of Great Bend, Goodson of McPherson, Bachman of Bishop Carroll & Ben Johnson of Wichita Trinity took the third through eighth spots into the finals.
The 100 Yard Breaststroke was dominated by Andrew Parker, who finished with a 1:02.70 in the prelims, while Heckman of Maize South (3rd), Will Smith of Bishop Carroll (4th) and Khoury of Carroll (6th) will also be in the finals.
The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay will see Bishop Carroll as the two-seed in the finals, as Backman, Jacob & Alec Khoury & Vulgamore finished with a time of 3:27.99, while Newton (Nathanael Dick, Matt Scheuerman, Spreier & Trumble) McPherson (Goodson, Campbell, Plenert & Aaron Marshall) & Collegiate (Barrett, Pirner, Horner & Powell) finished in third, sixth & eighth respectively.
The finals for 5-1A will begin at 10:30 on Saturday, with 6A finals beginning at 3:00.
