Teams across the state continue to fight for spots in a state tournament, with a substate championship in sight, while the 6A boys and 5A girls state fields are set. See how your team survived another day on the hardwood in the Friday Basketball Catch-All.
Boys
6A Junction City A Championship
The Derby basketball program is nothing to take lightly, but has had a tough time fighting through the substate championship game. But after a 66-57 win over Manhattan, the Panthers are going to state for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Taylor Schieber had a gargantuan game for Derby, leading the team with 30 points. Tyler Chambers added 12 for the Panthers.
6A Junction City B Championship
On the other side of the Junction City bracket, a City League showdown between Wichita East and Wichita Southeast took place with a trip to state on the line. The Blue Aces outscored Southeast 17-7 in the third quarter, and punched a ticket with a 60-50 win over the Golden Buffaloes. Samajae Jones led East with 19 points with Jordan Hester chipping in 13.
6A Maize A Championship
Wichita North has had a stellar season, with Connor Frankamp becoming the City League’s all-time leading scorer in a career on the way to a league title. Hutchinson was ready for battle, holding Frankamp to 13 points, but the Redskins are going to state with a 43-30 win. Zach Beard stepped it up for North with a 16-point game.
6A Maize B Championship
Garden City and Dodge City met for a substate edition of the Hatchet Game. With the states ratcheted up in the rivalry, Garden City is going to state after a narrow 40-37 win in the third and most important meeting. Dodge City had won the previous two games by 15 points each time.
Blue Valley Northwest, Shawnee Mission East, Blue Valley West, and Lawrence Free State round out the 6A field at Koch Arena next week.
3A Conway Springs Semifinals
Remington is one game away from state after edging Garden Plain 52-47. The Broncos benefited from a 28-point night from Caleb Tanner, advancing to the substate championship game.
Waiting for Remington in the championship game is Wichita Independent after the Panthers beat Douglass 52-38. Brice Dean led Independent with 19 points and Matthew Loveland added 15. Cody Holthaus scored 20 for the Bulldogs.
3A Hillsboro Semifinals
Sacred Heart had a big test in the No. 1 seed Marion, and it took overtime to get the job done, but the Knights got a 71-65 win over the top-seeded Warriors. Marion got 27 points from Jordan Hett and 20 from Jacob Harper, but couldn’t get the win. Sacred Heart hung tough with 20 points from Tony Chavez and picked up the win.
Waiting for Sacred Heart in the championship is Haven, who beat the host Hillsboro in a thrilling 44-43 win. The Wildcats were led by Luke Johnson who scored 15 points. Haven outscored Hillsboro 9-2 in the final quarter of the game to get the 1-point win.
3A Southwestern Heights Semifinals
Holcomb was tested against Cheney, but lived up to the challenge with a 58-51 win to advance to the championship.
The other team in the championship game is the favorite to win it all, for a third straight time, Scott City. In the semifinals, the Beavers dominated Southwestern Heights 79-50.
2A Moundridge Semifinals
Host Moundridge is one game away from state after handling Berean 44-30. Tyler Kaufman and Daniel Ratzlaff scored 11 points each for the Wildcats. The Warriors were led by Dallas Wiebe who had 11 points as well.
Peabody-Burns will be the team trying to knock off the host after handling Burden Central 62-48. Hunter Pickens led the Warriors with 16 points with Braxton Kyle scoring 11 and Tommy Morris adding 10.
2A Sterling Semifinals
Inman ground out a low-scoring 33-23 win over Central Plains to advance to the substate championship game. The Teutons got 16 points out of Josh Miller in the winning effort.
Little River is set to take on Inman after the Redskins nipped Sterling 59-55. Tevin Renken led Little River with 16 points and Chet Cordell was close behind with 15.
1A Div. I Burrton Semifinals
In Burrton, the host school dug deep to get a big win as the No. 5 seed Chargers knocked out top-seed Pretty Prairie 50-48. With the win, Burrton is one game away from a Cinderella run to state.
The team looking to end the dream in Burrton is Fairfield after a 60-50 win over Centre.
1A Div. I South Central Semifinals
In South Central, Minneola is on to the substate championship after beating Spearville 43-21. Deerfield will get Minneola in the championship game with the Spartans beat South Central 57-37.
1A Div. I St. John-Hudson Semifinals
Macksville cruises into the championship at St. John after a 76-55 win over Victoria. But the championship opponent is coming in with an even more dominant performance. St. John-Hudson routed LaCrosse 72-37. Zuriel Reyes had 22 points for the Tigers and Dean Wade scored 16 with 10 rebounds for a double-double.
1A Div. II Ingalls Semifinals
Ashland is moving to the championship game in Ingalls after a 44-35 win over Rolla. The Blue Jays will face Fowler after the Goldbugs dispatched Moscow 65-29.
1A Div. II South Barber Semifinals
Cunningham outlasted Stafford to edge the Trojans 51-49. South Barber will have a chance to defend its home court against Cunningham to earn a trip to state after beating Attica 48-38.
Girls
5A Goddard Eisenhower A Championship
Defending state champion Kapaun ran into a familiar foe in the substate championship in rival Bishop Carroll. With the Crusaders winning the first two games, the third one was no different. Kapaun came away with a 40-30 win to get back to the state tournament with a chance to defend the crown.
5A Goddard Eisenhower B Championship
Continuing with the rivalry theme out in Goddard, the B side featured a cross town rivalry game between Andover and Andover Central. Andover proved too much for Central, winning 60-38. The two teams split the series in the regular season with each team winning a game by a point.
5A Newton A Championship
Newton will move on to state after beating Salina Central 50-39. The Railers beat Central by 3 points in the first meeting, and had an easier time in the second, winning by 12. In the game that mattered, Newton came up with a third win against the Mustangs.
5A Newton B Championship
While Salina didn’t get Central into the state tournament, Salina South will go to state after beating Great Bend 56-46.
St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Miege, Mill Valley, and Leavenworth round out the rest of the 5A girls state field.
4A Abilene Semifinals
The championship game in Abilene will be worthy of a Friday or Saturday game at the Bicentennial Center in Salina next weekend.
No. 3-ranked McPherson is in the championship game after beating Clay Center 34-19. Katelyn Loecker led the Bullpups with 13 points and Hailey Ruder had 10.
Waiting for McPherson is No. 4-ranked Hesston after the Swathers ended Abilene’s season with a 54-31 win. Hesston was led by Cami Richardson and Ashley Weaver who had 15 points each. Caylee Richardson added 11 for the Swathers.
4A Mulvane Semifinals
Clearwater is one game away from Salina after handing host Mulvane a heartbreaking 50-48 loss. The Fighting Indians are up against another hot team that refuses to lose in Augusta. The Orioles scrapped out a 28-26 win over Wellington.
4A Pratt Semifinals
Andale’s season is over after Pratt protected the home floor with a gritty 48-43 win. The Greenbacks got huge production from Jenson Maydew who scored 20 points and Payton Hoeme chipped in 12.
Pratt will face Hugoton after the Eagles beat Colby 61-52. Hugoton was led by Chastity Parsons with 20 points.
3A Hillsboro Semifinals
Haven is a game away from state after beating Lyons 53-34. The Wildcats were led by Hailey Davis who scored 20 points and Samantha Stallbaumer added 11.
Waiting for Haven is Hillsboro, looking to give the hometown fans a show after beating Southeast of Saline 59-28. Tena Loewen gave the Trojans a 21-point effort with Addie Lackey adding 13 and Danae Bina chipped in 11.
2A Moundridge Semifinals
Berean is moving on to the championship game after handling Chase County 52-33. The Warriors got 20 points from Carrie Unruh and Xannie Quiring had 15.
Moundridge will have a shot at their Heart of America rivals after owning Peabody-Burns 49-16. Moundridge was led by Michelle Schrag who had 11 points and MacKenzie Suderman had 10. The Wildcats had 10 different players score.
2A Plainville Semifinals
Smith Center will have a chance to play for a trip to state after beating Oakley 67-50. Sydney Benoit scored 18 points for Smith Center while Trenna Cox and Alexis Ryan scored 15 points each.
The other team in the championship game is Ellis who pounded Ness City 70-41.
2A Republic County Semifinals
Republic County is on to the championship game after holding off Ell-Saline 44-40. The Buffaloes will meet Washington County for a trip to state after the Tigers beat Lincoln 80-56.
2A Sterling Semifinals
Sterling will play for a substate championship after beating Kiowa County 60-26. Chelsey Riffel led the Black Bears with 13 points and Sydney Wilson added 11.
Sterling will get Central Plains after the Oilers beat Pratt Skyline 56-24.
1A Div. I Spearville Semifinals
Spearville will play Bucklin for a substate title, after Spearville beat South Central 59-39. Bucklin ended Satanta 59-46.
1A Div. I Udall Semifinals
South Haven beat Cedar Vale-Dexter 52-39 to advance to the championship game where the Cardinals will face Caldwell. Caldwell is still alive after nipping St. Paul 41-40.
1A Div. II South Barber
At South Barber, the host is into the championship game after beating Argonia in a narrow 48-44 win. South Barber will see Norwich who beat Attica 45-28.
1A Div. II Sylvan-Lucas
Wilson coasts into the championship game with a 69-46 win over Otis Bison. The Dragons will play Elyria Christian for the championship after the Eagles beat Sylvan-Lucas 36-25.
