AVCTL Div. I
In the upset of the night, Salina South thumped 6A’s top-ranked Hutchinson in a 35-10 eye-opener. After Derby’s 49-0 romp of Campus, the Panthers are now in the driver’s seat for the division, and will face Hutch Next week.
Maize went 41-yards to Kendall Stewart on the last play of the game to nip Salina Central 28-21.
AVCTL Div. II
Andover edged rival Andover Central in a gigantic 17-14 win for the Trojans. The game was knotted at 14-14 with Andover driving. With 3 seconds left in the game and the ball on the 15-yard line, the Trojans lined up for a field goal that was missed. But a roughing the punter penalty gave kicker Toshi Hayashi another chance he did not miss.
In a 5A League, 4A Maize South made a huge jump up to Div. II, but has not fled from the challenge. After trouncing Goddard 42-0, the Mavericks are a perfect 5-0 on the year and are alone at the top of the league standings just past the halfway point of the season.
With a 17-0 win over Valley Center, Arkansas City is 3-1 in the league, joining Andover as the two teams with one loss in league games.
GWAL
Carroll ran wild in its rivalry game with Northwest, outscoring the Grizzlies by a whopping 61-14 final. As the top-ranked 5A team in the state, the Golden Eagles have been proving it week after week.
Wichita East fought off a Kapaun comeback attempt and picked up a 14-7 win over Kapaun to stay a game behind Carroll in the league standings, and Wichita Southeast moves to .500 in league play with a 21-0 win over Wichita North.
AVCTL Div. III
In one of the more interesting, competitive games of the night, Mulvane has climbed to the No. 2 spot in 4A over the course of the season, but faced a tough test against a Rose Hill team that has struggled, but is the defending 4A champion. The Rockets put up a fight but the prolific Wildcats’ offense led by Ty Redington was too much in a 20-13 win for Mulvane.
The McPherson Bullpups also stay undefeated in league games after a 47-8 win over Winfield. Riley Allen had a field day against El Dorado in Buhler’s 62-21 rout over the Wildcats.
AVCTL Div. IV
Clearwater made a valiant late effort , but Collegiate stays undefeated in the league after holding off the Indians 38-35. Andale remains a game behind Collegiate after smoking Augusta 64-9.
Wellington picked up its first win of the year taking out Circle 36-12.
CPL
In maybe the craziest finish in the state, Wichita Independent dealt Chaparral a heartbreaking loss when an 80-yard screen was finished off with a pitch to lineman Lueke Anderson who took it into the end zone with no time left for a 61-58 Panther victory.
Upstart Cheney gave Garden Plain a rough fight, but the Owls finished strong for a 34-12 win that was closer than the score would suggest. Garden Plain moves to 5-0 in the league.
Conway Springs is also undefeated after a 45-14 win over Wichita Trinity, and the 5-0 Cardinals with travel to face the 5-0 Owls in Garden Plain next week in a huge CPL mash-up.
Douglass took out Bluestem 30-8.
CKL
In the North Division, Hillsboro is putting together a solid season, staying undefeated after a 20-0 shutout over Smoky Valley. Halstead is right behind the Trojans and hosted a tough South Division team in Pratt. The Dragons protected the home field with a 26-13 win over the Greenbacks.
In the North Division, Nickerson moves to 4-1 on the year after a 36-12 win over Lyons. Hesston has struggled to find wins this season, but picked up a big one 54-12 over Kingman.
WAC
Garden City keeps plugging along in the WAC, one game behind league-leader Hays with a convincing 37-14 win over Liberal. Great Bend is taking advantage of one of the best defenses in the league, to stay in the hunt as well with a 24-7 win over Dodge City. The Panthers defense has allowed a league-low 78 points this season, with the next stingiest in Garden City’s 120.
Non-League
Hays is rolling along after beating Wichita South 55-12. Haven has picked up its third victory of the season after beating Belle Plaine handedly 49-18.
Sterling gashed the Ellinwood defense for a 50-18 win for the Black Bears. Inman picked up a big win outlasting Medicine Lodge 35-22. Newton beat Eisenhower 48-14.
