The Hoisington girls golf team capitalized on their home course advantage, winning the 321A Regional at the Lake Barton Course by three strokes over Russell, Pretty Prairie finished third.
Lady Cardinals head coach Bruce Cooper admits there was some pressure on his team to come through at home
"I've seen it both ways," said coach Cooper. "I've seen teams play really well on their home course, a I've seen teams blow up on their home course. So you just dont know what you are going to get and today we had a pretty nice day so were happy about it."
Chelsea Flickinger of Pretty Prairie ran away with the individual title, shooting an 89 and winning by seven strokes over Blakelee Cooper of Hoisington. Kaitlyn Walker and Teri Ptzark of Russell and Pretty Praire's Shelby Schrag rounded out the top 5 finishers.
"I played pretty well, I was really happy," said Flickinger. " I only used one ball the entire time so that helped. No out of bounds no in the bunkers so that helped signifigantly."
"I definitely could has shot better on the back," said Cooper. "I was hopping for a little better score, but I'll take this.
Thomas More Prep did not qualify as a team, but the Lady Monarchs were still big winners, qualifying three golfers to state. They were Candance Staab, Monica Michaud and and Breanna Hazelhurst. Katherine Harrenbrook of Blue Stream and Kaly Fitzgerald of Medicine Lodge alse qualified for next week's state tournament. They had to wait a while to find out, it was nearly six hours after they teed off before the final score cards were turned in.
"It was incredibility hard sitting and waiting," said Michaud.
"It feels pretty good," said Hazelhurst. I achieved my goal."
Added Stabb, "It feels pretty good. It's exciting."
