The 2012 season has probably not been what either the Liberal Redskins or the Hays High Indians had expected. The Redskins, who won the 5A state title a year ago, came in to Thursday's game 3-7-1 on this season. The Indians, where not much better at 3-5-1.
Liberal raced out to the early lead. Esteban Michel blasted a goal at the 12:18 mark in the first half and then Junior Mendez lobbed a corner kick in with six minutes to go in the half to give the Redskins a 2-0 lead at the break.
But half number two belonged to Hays. The got a goal at the 5:26 mark to cut the lead in half and then less than a minute later Shawn Herman scored the game tying goal to push the game into overtime.
Herman would again be the hero in overtime. His goal with 6:49 to go in the extra period completed the comeback and gave Hays the 3-2 victory.
The Indians improved to 4-5-1. They have games with Garden City and Bishop Carroll left on the schedule before district play begins.
Liberal falls to 3-8-1. They will wrap up the regular season with Heights, Great Bend and Dodge City.
