WICHITA, Kan.—
Wichita Heights is ranked in the top 25 of several national polls, but on Tuesday night Kapaun threatened to knock the Falcons from their perch.Kapaun gave Heights all it could handle for four-plus quarters, but the Falcons pulled the game out in overtime by a score of 61-52. The Crusaders tried to slow the pace down at the end of the game and eat clock, but the plan failed to work when Kapaun was unable to convert late possessions.
Gavin Thurman led all scorers with 19 points for Heights. Terrence Moore and Perry Ellis each chipped in 18 points apiece. That included several back-breaking dunks for the pair in the overtime frame.
East rolled by South 70-61 behind a balanced attack from several players. The Aces had four players in double figures and two more with nine points. Nathan Jackson led the way with 14 points and teammates Jalen Love and Larry Dennis were right behind with 13 points each. South had two players score 15 points on the night.
Northwest nipped North 61-59 on a Craig Nicholson last-second shot. Nicholson led all scorers with 20 points. Conner Frankamp had 19 points for North. Southeast dropped Carroll 57-52.
Out in the AVCTL, Derby dropped Maize 56-45 behind 22 points from Kyler Steadman. Campus got by Hutchinson 35-33. Salina South also won by two over Newton 46-44. Salina Central won an out-of-division game against Maize South 61-39.
McPherson had trouble with Goddard Eisenhower, but pulled out a 61-57 win. Travell Robinson had a game-high 18 points for the Bullpups to go with his four rebounds. Cody Cape and Jordan Hart poured in 16 points each in the win.
Ark City eked out a two-point win over Winfield 55-53. Goddard traveled out to Dodge City and got rolled 60-36. Valley Center fell in the Cheney Tournament to Collegiate 59-42.
Buhler beat Andale 60-56 at home. Clearwater rolled in the Cheney Tournament with a 59-42 win over Chaparral. In the Kingman Tournament, Mulvane won by four over Haven 59-54 and Wellington beat the host Eagles 55-42.
Trey Unrau dropped 28 points in Moundridge’s 58-46 win over Garden Plain in the Moundridge Tournament. Hillsboro won with similar ease 65-47 over Lyons on the other side of the tournament.
Belle Plaine thumped Remington 59-46 in the Marion Tournament. Wichita Trinity got 15 points from Ryan Miller in a 50-47 win over Hesston. Halstead went scoreless in the second period, but still won 42-32 against Bennington. Hays got 13 points from Derek Bixenman as the Indians thumped Colby 65-39.
Douglass handled Fredonia 60-44 in the Circle Tournament. Out in the Inman Tournament, Sedgwick and Inman both put another notch in the win column. Sedgwick got its win over St. John 58-48 and the Teutons beat Cunningham 55-49.
