Dodge City hosted Liberal in their last boys' soccer match up of the regular season. Last year, this game had regional ramifications. On Thursday night, a win would provide much needed momentum for either team heading into regional play because both sit in the bottom seedings. The Redskins outplayed the Demons in nearly every aspect and sealed up the game 2-1.
Throughout the beginning of the game both teams maintained equal possession. Liberal had the advantage with the wind at its back. Redskin senior goalkeeper Saul Degado made multiple huge saves that were aided by his quick defensive players. In the 25th minute one of those defenders earned the chance to set up a scoring opportunity for the Redskins. Senior Reymundo Juarez got the free kick to set up a big play. He aired it out and although Demon goalie Junior Soto dove out into traffic to make the block but junior midfielder Samuel Cruz was waiting in the center of the field to sink it in. 1-0 Redskins.
The Skins certainly had more shots on goal and with five minutes left in the half their perseverance prevailed. Senior forward Esteban Michel slingshot the Skins final goal of the night past Soto's outstretched arms. Dodge City’s Rene Yeverino put the Demons on the scoreboard late in the second half but that was all the Demons wrote. Liberal won 2-1 and will take that momentum with them into regional play.
