WICHITA, Kan.—
The Independent School boys cross country team extended its winning streak to four with a victory at the Central Plains League meet last Thursday at Bluestem. Independent won the meet with 21 points, which was followed by Wichita Trinity with 79 points. Cheney was third with 88 points.
Junior Zach Wolken won the varsity boys five kilometer race with a time of 17 minutes, 50 seconds to claim the individual league title. Jonah Aspegren won the JV 5k with a time of 18:55.
“I knew going into it we had a shot to get the whole team into the top 10 and win the meet.” Wolken said.
The team almost made that happen, as it had six runners in the top ten with another runner coming it at 11th.
Wolken had set personal goals going into the meet as he expected to win the meet and clock in a time in the 16-minute range.
A handful of Independent’s varsity runners have not been running their usual, faster times lately. However, with regionals and a chance to qualify for the state competition they are expected to win, many on the team are ready to step up to prove themselves.
“I think that regionals at Cessna will give us a solid look at our times. [I think] we will do very well there and state,” Wolken said. “For state though we will need to pick it up no matter what.”
