AAU National Junior Olympics
Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI
July 29-August 5, 2017

With the USATF Junior Olympics national championships being contested in Lawrence this year, a smaller delegation than usual participated in the full AAU summer series this year.

Top finishes by known Kansas preps included Reagan Geihsler (Salina-Lakewood MS, 8th Gr) placing 2nd in the G14 Javelin with a throw of 105’7” and 8th in the Discus with a throw of 106’2”, and Kyle Reese (Lebo, FR) who finished 2nd in the B14 Pole Vault with a clearance of 9’5.25”.

The leading multiple placer from Kansas was Sway Jenkins (SM-Home School, SO?) who place 2nd in the B15-16 Triple Jump (41’4”), 3rd in the Long Jump (20’4.5”) and 7th in the High Jump (5’7”).

Joshua Rutledge (Riverton, SO) placed 6th in the B17-18 3000m with a season best 9:23.22 after turning a 1500m best of 4:24.97 earlier in the meet, both times ranking in the 2017 Kansas top 10. Julius Bolden (Wichita-Collegiate MS, 8th Gr) finished 6th in the B15-16 Long Jump with a leap of 19’11.5” while Auna Childress (Free State, FR) finished 9th in the G15-16 Triple Jump with a legal wind best of 36’5.5” (-1.3m/s).

Levi Saltsman (El Dorado, JR) finished 9th in the B17-18 Javelin with a best of 137’10”. Alexander Hammersmith (Hutch-Trinity, SO) placed 14th in the B15-16 High Jump at 5’8.75” and Cale Carson (ElDorado, JR) missed his season best while finishing 16th in the B17-18 1500m in a time of 4:18.95.

There were other top 20 finishes by athletes competing under the banner of Kansas affiliated clubs, but we have been unable to verify their 2016-17 school of attendance and grade level. With verification that they were Kansas preps we will include their marks on the 2017 Kansas prep list.

I am still looking for the school attended during the 2016-17 school year and class in school for the following athletes. If you can provide the school and grade level attended for any of the following athletes, the information would be greatly appreciated. We want to make sure our Kansas preps are duly recognized and the up-and-comers are on folks radar screen for next season!

“Thank you”

This blog wraps up the 2017 Kansas prep track & field season! Cross country gets underway shortly with the non-KSHSAA indoor season beginning in about four months and outdoors firing up only eight months from now!

Coaches, athletic directors, even some parents, “Thank you” for forwarding meet results during our just concluded season. It is only with your help that we are able to compile an accurate, composite state list! Thanks again for the help and keep those results coming!
