Haley sets A-T Kansas best

Laurel Haley (Washburn Rural, SR) fired the ball-and-chain, 4-kilogram Hammer out 128’8” to take over the #1 position on the AllTime
Kansas list for girls, edging ahead of Paiton Bruce’s (Andale, SR) previous state best, set earlier in 2017, by one inch.
The Tecumseh meet featured just throwing events: Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Hammer and Weight.

USATF Region 16 Junior Olympic Championships Joplin, MO July 6-9, 2017

Kansas preps descended on Joplin with the goal of qualifying for the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships scheduled for
the final week of July at Kansas University’s Rock Chalk Park.

Taylor Briggs (Chapman MS, 8 th) placed second in the G13-14 1500m with a time of 5:04.61, #3 in Kansas for 2017, behind times by Emily Venters (Free State, SR) and Callie Logue (Girard, SR). Briggs won the 3000m in 11:11.35, the leading outdoor marks for 3k by a Kansas prep this year, just ahead of Jaycee Vath’s (Lincoln MS, 8 th) 11:12.21.

Evann Seratte (Lawrence, SO) finished second in the G15-16 800 (2:20.04) and third in the 400m (59.72). Samantha Vermetten (Valley Heights, FR) finished second in the 15-16 1500m with a time of 5:06.86, #4 in Kansas for 2017. Autumn Prince (Sylvan-Lucas, FR) won the G 15-16 3000m in 10:33.13, the #2 time in Kansas this season, with Vermetten second in 10:53.95. Arie’Auna Childress (Free State, FR) won the 15-16 Triple Jump with a best of 36’5.75”. Paiton Bruce (Andale) won the 15-16 Hammer Throw with a toss of 114’5”. Nevan Tebb-Lolar (Blue Valley West, SO) won the Boys 15-16 200m in 22.52. Matt Everett (Winfield, SO) won the 15-16 Discus with a throw of 156’1”.

In the Girls 17-18 division, Kalli Anderson (Newton, SO) won the 100m in 12.35 with teammate Savannah Simmons (Newton, JR) second. Simmons won the 200m (25.10) with Christal Mosley (Wichita SE, JR) second, Demitra Carter (KC Sumner, SR) third and Anderson fourth. Mosley took home gold in the 400m (56.18) and High Jump (5’7”) with Hannah Turner (Blue Valley SW, SO) fifth in the 400m. Kelsey Southard (Blue Valley SW, JR) finished second in the 800m. Lindsay Anderson (Chapman, JR) placed first in the 1500m (5:19.42) with Robyn Selzer (Wallace County, JR) second (5:20.79). Selzer added gold by winning the 3000m in 11:52.50.

Rylea Oliver (Basehor-Linwood, JR) won the 2k Steeplechase in 8:15.87 with Southard second. Autumn Hanna (Maize, JR) finished second in the 100m Hurdles in 15.71. Moorea Long (Paola, JR) improved her SB to 5’5” in placing second to Mosley in the High Jump with Megan Eckman (Mill Valley, SR) third and Morgan Thomas (Mill Valley, SR) tied for fourth. Samantha VanHoecke (Paola, JR) just missed her season best while winning the Pole Vault with a clearance of 12’5.5” with Natalie Lanman (SM North, SR) third.

Bailey Turner (Olathe East, JR) won the Long Jump at 18’0.5”. Jaleesa McWashington (Olathe NW, SO) won the Triple Jump with a season best 37’7.75” with 2017 Kansas leader Jessie Stindt (SM East, JR) second, Bailey Turner third and Kayla Smith (Valley Heights, JR) third. Sydney Johnson (Beloit, JR) won the Discus (140’1”) and was third in Shot Put. Shelby Vermetten (Valley Heights, SR) was third in the Discus (128’2”). Sarah Bond (Mission Valley, JR) won the Javelin with a season best throw of 132’5” with Gabrielle Diederich (Sacred Heart, SR) second and Morgan Thomas (Mill Valley) third. Laurel Haley (Washburn Rural, SR) won the Hammer Throw with a toss of 126’10”, #2 All-Time in Kansas prep history with Shelby Vermetten finishing second at 115’2” and Madison Martin (Anderson County, SR) third. Cameryn Thomas won the Heptathlon with a state leading 3939 points with Taylor Savolt (Garden City, SO) second with 3816 and Kayla Kurtz (Baldwin, SO) third with 3776.+

In the Boys’ 17-18 division, Philip Landrum (Wichita South, JR) was edged by thousandths of a second in the 100m as first and second places were officially 11.10. Ollie McGee (Wichita SE, SO) finished third with Richard Newman (Topeka, SR) fourth.Landrum and McGee were again second and third in the 200m, running 22.19 and 22.44. Julian Lacey (Olathe North, JR) grabbed the 400m title in 49.14 with Corey Minks (Maize South, SO) second in a season best 49.37 which moved him into Kansas’ 2017 top 10. Luke Jensen (Blue Valley West, JR) won the 800m in 2:01.91 with Hunter Wilcox (Blue Valley-OP, SO) second and Hunter Henderson (Shawnee Heights, JR) third. Aaron Modrow (Chapman, SO) lowered his season best to 4:19.87 in winning the 1500m with Henderson second in a season best 4:20.36, Wilcox third (4:22.43) and Tamron Thornburg (Wichita East, SR) fifth. Modrow also took the 3000m gold, winning in 9:27.43 while Henderson won the 2k Steeplechase in 6:55.13 with Thornburg second. Noah
Green (St Thomas-Aquinas, JR) won the 400m Hurdles (55.03) after posting a preliminary time of 53.69p, just off his season best of 53.51. Emmanuel Okwuone (Olathe South, JR) finished second to Green with a new season best 55.03 while Davion Scott (KC Turner, JR) was third. Richard Newman (Topeka, SR) finally broke the 7-foot barrier in the High Jump, winning with a 2017 Kansas prep best leap of 7’0.25” while Michael Hoffer (Shawnee Heights, JR) was second at 6’6.75”. Newman also won the Long Jump, spanning a Kansas 2017 best of 23’8”. Issac Smallwood (Wichita Heights, SR) placed second in the Triple Jump with a best of 46’4.25”. At the annual Sunflower Games held at Hummer Park in Topeka, Summer Kragel (Olathe South, SR) won the Women’s 17-18 High Jump with a clearance of 5’5” while Samantha VanHoecke (Paola, JR) won the 17-18 Pole Vault with a best of 12’0”. Shelby Vermetten (Valley Heights, SR) swept the 17-18 Discus and Shot Put with throws of 33’11.25” and 128’6”. Dana Baker (Olathe North, JR) just missed her season best in winning the 17-18 Javelin with a throw of 163’7”.

On the boys side, Sam Hankins (Manhattan, FR) won the Boys 15-16 Javelin with a throw of 195’9” ahead of Jeffrey Schartz (Paola, SO) best of 173’0”. On the track, Tyler Watts (Caney Valley, SR) won the 17-18 110m Hurdles in 15.10 in addition to gold in the High Jump and Triple Jump. Peyton Lane (Clay Center, JR) was the lone 17-18 competitor to clear 15’0” in the Pole Vault. Mitch Miller (Seaman, SR) won the Hammer with the #5 throw in Kansas for 2017, 125’6”. Hunter Henderson (Shawnee Heights, JR) took first in the 17-18 1500m with a time of 4:26.28 and the 2k Steeplechase in 7:01.94.

Green lowers A-T Kansas best in 110m Hurdles

A good sized delegation of Kansas prep took on the nation on the University of Kansas’ Rock Chalk Park facility west of Lawrence.The opening day of the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships found Rylea Oliver (Basehor-Linwood, JR) placing 9 th in the G17-18 2k Steeplechase running 8:02.20, the #5 time in Kansas for 2017 and #16 All-Time. Melody Ochana (Pioneer Trail MSOlathe, 8th Gr) placed 9th in G15-16 Steeplechase with a time of 8:05.02 after running 10:54.19 for the 3,000m to place 3rd at the USATF Region 16 JO Qualifier in Joplin, a time that ranked #6 in Kansas this year.

Day two saw Cameryn Thomas (Free State, JR) place 13th in the Girls 17-18 Heptathlon with a 2017 Kansas leading 4114 points, just ahead of Taylor Savolt (Garden City, SO) in 14th place with 3905 points. Darryl Givens (Andover Central, JR) finished 12th in the Boys 17-18 Decathlon with a state 2017 best of 5799 points.

On Wednesday Megan Eckman (Mill Valley, SR) placed 3rd in the G17-18 High Jump with a clearance of 5’5” while Christal Mosley (Wichita SE, JR) tied for 11th at 5’3”. Richard Newman (Topeka, SR) finished 6th in the B17-18 Long Jump with a best of 23’1.25”. Noah Green (St Thomas-Aquinas, JR) lowered his personal best to 53.00 in the preliminaries of the B17-18 400m Hurdles, a mark that advanced him to Sunday’s finals and solidified his hold on the #4 spot on the A-T Kansas list. Samantha Vermetten (Valley Heights, FR) was 10th in the G15-16 800m preliminaries in 2:20.78, but missed advancing to the finals by two places. Christal Mosley qualified for the semifinals of the G17-18 200m with a legal wind time of 24.98 while Demitra Carter (KC Sumner, SR) advanced with time of 25.00 and Kalli Anderson took the final qualifying spot with a mark of 25.22. Savannah Simmons missed advancing by two positions with her best of 25.37. Ollie McGee (Wichita SE, SO) qualified for the semifinals in the B17-18 200m with a legal wind time of 22.27. Matt Everett (Winfield, SO) placed 5th in the B15-16 Discus with a throw of 159’1”.

On Thursday Isabelle Peters (Lindsborg-Smoky Valley MS, 8th Gr) placed second in the G15-16 Pole Vault with a state leading vault of 12’7.5”. Taylor Briggs (Chapman MS, 8th Gr) placed 27th in the G13-14 1500m with a season best 5:02.12, the #3 Kansas best in 2017, but failed to advance to the finals. Samantha Vermetten lowered her season best in the G15-16 1500m to 5:04.94, but also failed to advance. Hunter Henderson (Shawnee Heights, JR) placed 22nd in the preliminaries of the B 17-18 1500m with a time of 4:16.51, but was unable to advance to the finals. Noah Green led all qualifiers in the B17-18 110m Hurdles with his legal wind 13.75
(+1.0 m/s). Kalli Anderson advanced to the semifinals of the G17-18 100m, placing 18th with a legal wind 11.99 (+1.8 m/s).

Savannah Simmons placed 29th (12.20, +1/3m/s) and failed to advance to the next round. Anderson failed to advance to the finals of 200m, placing 16th with a season best, but windy (+2.5m/s) 24.79. Demitra Carter was 17th with a windy 24.82 (+2.9m/s) while Christal Mosley finished 18th with a windy 24.92. Ollie McGee just missed his season best, but failed to advance to the finals of the B17-18 200m, clocking a windy 21.64 (+3.3m/s).

On Friday Jessie Stindt (SM East, JR) was the top Kansan in the G17-18 Triple Jump, placing 21st with a legal wind 37’0.5” (+0.2m/s). Samantha VanHoecke (Paola, JR) tied for 6th in the G17-18 Pole Vault with a clearance of 12’1.5”. Natalie Lanman (SM North, SR) finished 19th with a best of 11’1.75”. Isaac Smallwood (Wichita Heights, SR) was the top Kansas finisher in the B17-18 Triple Jump, finishing 27th with a windy (+2.5m/s) best of 44’9.75”. Sydney Johnson (Beloit, JR) led Kansas entries in the G17-18 Discus, placing 15th with a best of 128’9”. Shelby Vermetten finished 19th with a best of 124’7”. Collin Oswalt (Central Christian, 8th Gr) finished 6th in the B15-16 3,000m with a season best 9:19.70. Kallie Anderson’s windy(+2.5m/s) 11.98 in the semifinals of the G17-18 100m placed 18th and failed to advance to the finals. Ollie McGee’s season best and legal wind 10.69 (+1.6m/s) placed 11th in the B17-18 100m semifinals and failed to move him on into the final round.

Saturday found Madeline Righter (Olathe NW, SO) leading Kansas girls in the 15-16 age group High Jump with a tie for 12th at 5’3” while Hunter Krom (Lawrence, JR) led Kansas boys in the 17-18 Javelin with an 13th place finish at 172’11”. Autumn Princ(Sylvan-Lucas, FR) won the G15-16 3,000m with the #2 Kansas time for 2017, 10:22.55 while Melody Ochana (Olathe-Pioneer Trail MS, 8th Gr) finished 5th in 10:38.97 and Samantha Vermetten 12th (11:05.78). Taylor Briggs (Chapman MS, 8th Gr) topped the Sunflower state girls in the 13-14 3,000m with a season best 11:02.50, 16th place finish. Robin Selzer (Wallace County, JR) placed 7th in the G17-18 3,000m with a time of 11:08.42. Noah Green advanced to Sunday’s finals in the B17-18 110m Hurdles with his 3rd legal wind (+0.2m/s) 14.03.

During Sunday’s wrap-up session, Noah Green lowered the all-time Kansas best in the B17-18 110m Hurdles, winning in a wind legal time of 15.31 (+1.7m/s). Green then came back to place 3rd in the 400m Hurdles with a personal best 52.52, #4 on the A-T Kansas list. Sam Hankins (Manhattan, FR) finished 3rd in the B15-16 Javelin with a throw of 187’11”. Marshall Faurot (Scott Community, SO) was 8th in the B17-18 Pole Vault with a clearance of 14’5.25”, just short of his season best of 14’6”. Kansans went 2-3 in the B17-18 High Jump as Michael Hoffer (Shawnee Heights, JR) raised his season best to 6’10.75” and finished one place ahead of Richard Newman (Topeka, SR) who cleared the same height while Jack Durst (SM West, JR) improved his season best to 6’6.75” in placing 9th. Sarah Bond (Mission Valley, JR) improved her season best in the G17-18 Javelin, placing 2nd with a throw of 134’10”, one place ahead of Gabrielle Diederich’s (Sacred Heart, SR) 134’4”, with Morgan Thomas (Mill Valley, SR) 8th (124’3”).
