The Maize offense starts and stops---often on a dime--with Dalyn Johnson and he’s back for another round of damage in 2017.

Johnson is one of the premiere running backs in Kansas. The versatile skill player amassed nearly 1,800 yards of total offense and 30 touchdowns in 2016.

Johnson will take his handoffs and receptions from Caleb Grill, who assumes the starting quarterback role for Maize in 2017. Grill’s transition to quarterback began in week eight of the 2016 season when former starting QB Brayden Payne suffered a season ending injury in the first quarter of a 40-7 loss to Hutch.

Payne returns for his senior season but is flirting with a switch to wide receiver. Caleb Grill relieved Payne during his absence last year and impressed the coaching staff.

“Grill does things really well,” said head coach Gary Guzman. “He has a quick release. He’s pretty accurate on his throws. He’s obviously been in competitive situations.”

Grill said his arm strength is his greatest asset.

“Our run game is always going to be there, so hopefully we can get a passing game going to keep the defense shifted on both sides.”
