Garden City, Kan. The Garden City boys’ golf team is headed back to state after winning the 6A regional at home with a 313 overall score.
“It’s exciting, I have a relatively young team and it’s kind of a learning experience every weekend, ever golf tournament,” Garden City head golf coach Jacob Waller said. “I think we’re in the right place. I know that Sion (Audrain) and Taylor (Larsen) are pushing each other every week and bouncing back and forth. I think we’re peaking at the right time.”
Buffs junior Taylor Larsen finished two strokes behind Hutchinson’s Jack Lanham for second place with a 68. He was especially locked in on the back nine shooting a 32.
“I feel great,” Larsen said. “He (Lanham) deserved it, shooting six under is amazing. I felt like I played great, best round of the year for sure. I got up and down every time.”
Dodge City earned a trip to state as a team with a 341.
“I was really proud of the boys, first time we qualified as a team with the boys for three years so that was kind of one of our goals,” Dodge City head golf coach Jim Mapel said. “We’ve already played in Manhattan once this year. The greens are very challenging and very fast. We’re going to work on our accuracy off the tee box and chipping and putting and the mental of playing in a state tournament. It’s just a different atmosphere but we’re looking forward to it.”
