Future Shocker walk-on walks off with gold at State

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- Tate Busse is months away from starting his basketball career at Wichita State as a preferred walk-on.

This weekend, the St. Francis senior finished his track and field career on the same campus as a gold medalist.

Busse and his 4x400 meter relay team took first place with a time of 3:26.59. Busse was the third leg in the foursome with Jordan Raby, Brady Dinkel, and Wyatt Hackler.

The Western Kansas senior also medaled in the 800 meter run, taking second place with a time of 2:00.18, and finished 11th in the long jump with a distance of 19-01.75.

Yet, Busse is still looking forward to the next time he steps on the Wichita State campus, as a freshman on Gregg Marshall's basketball team. He knows he has big shoes to fill as a small-town walk-on.

"Every small-town kid knows Ron Baker and wants to be like him," Busse said. "It's just awesome to get a chance to play for Wichita and see if hopefully I can do something."
